A little online company called AMAZON has chosen Jazan Wild's CARNIVAL COMICS as the FIRST and ONLY comic book company to be part of their App store company launch! I am proud to be Carnival comic's lead artist and happy that I can finally announce this great news! To shed some light on the honor, this launch was and is not an APP free for all, where almost anyone can register and provide content like most of the communication platforms providing APP content. This is a different model that AMAZON and ANDROID are establishing whereby the APP content is more selective so that you the consumer don't have to sift through mountains of sub-par APPS. We at CARNIVAL have been graced by the titan online retailer that is AMAZON and ANDROID to provide entertaining APPS that represent the vast comic book community.

There are so many great and talented books out there that I'm certain we will be in good company soon. The digital age is upon us and although I myself miss what it's like to enjoy a visceral experience with print comics, what should always be the most important part of comics, is the story.

I have worked closely with Jazan Wild long enough to see his grand vision come to life both in music and art, both of which entwine his magical stories. His stuff is in your face and what Rock 'n' Roll comics is all about.

I am in the trenches completing Jazan's 4th and final Funhouse of Horrors book after which I will be continuing the CARNIVAL of SOULS series that stopped at Issue 3 when published at Marcosia. Issue's 1-3 of both CARNIVAL of SOULS and the FUNHOUSE of HORRORS are available for download at Amazon right now! What's even better about this is that they're FREE!

On top of that, AMAZON has developed a new feature that allows you to test the APP on your computer! Now you can catch up on all the CARNIVAL titles before we release the books I've been working on. Click on the title above for a link to the books! Strap in and enjoy the ride!

The UNIQUES

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-N-5tMsOu-uo/TXLBJbGivyI/AAAAAAAAAII/UgeMFkY0a6k/s320/Countryman%2BLegacy%2BPin-Up.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5580735255903649570" />
This is a long time coming. I finally have a minute to mention and rave about The UNIQUES. This is a comic series created, written, drawn and colored by the dynamic duo, Adam Withers and Comfort Love.

They've been adding to the Uniques mythos for a while and have a lot of books under their belt. It's super hero stuff at it's best in the indy market. The art is spectacular and they have created a rich three dimensional universe. You can get your fix here, either in print or online: http://uniquescomic.com/
They do this for a living so be generous. A while back they asked myself and other talented folks to contribute to a spin off feature called The Uniques Tales. I was asked to draw a pinup of their character the Country Man, which was part of a story in The UNIQUES TALES Issue # 5. You can read the story online here: http://uniquescomic.com/issueut.php
Thanks so much for enoying this stuff and supporting your independent comics.

The Opossum!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 207px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6ASstDnaibE/TW1yrebSutI/AAAAAAAAAIA/fMmCsmZdO6g/s320/the_opossum_Rudy_Vasquez_02.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5579241604609391314" />
The Opossum!

Yes, that's right you heard me correctly. The Opossum! I know, it's a little odd hearing that and relating it to comic books but is it? It's comics after all and I can think of another rodent turned the symbol of hope for a city called Gotham.

Anyway, last summer I was invited to be a guest at a fledgling Con down in the gulf of TX (TABLE Con), in Brownsville and McAllen Texas specifically. I was invited by Nino Mesarina, (of Too Much Laundry Detergent Man, fame) and the talented team of Omer Garcia III(Glitch) and Aaron Moses (The Opossum).

They were great hosts. We visited South Padre island for a great dinner and I met a lot of nice fans. I was fortunate enough to make new friends and colleagues and be introduced to their local comic book offerings. This always excites me because I am reminded as to why I wanted to start working in this industry to begin with.

The Opossum has a lot of potential as do the creators I met. There is an abundance of talent in south Texas and plenty of kindness. Take some time to say Hi yp these guys on Facebook or Myspace and inspire one another. Or even if I should but the show (life) must go on right?

This isn't a memoir so I won't go into much detail. I think that's been my problem though, is that I tell people way too much and still keep important bits to myself. The pieces that aren't very flattering and in the end I am my worst fan, which leads to not so great things.

I've had to reprioritize my life yet again and hopefully move forward in a positive way. What this means for you, is more art and hopefully better art. I know pain is good for creative people so I've got a mountain load of it to kull from.

I've learned and am learning one of the biggest lessons ever. First, you can't really love anyone 100% until you love yourself. In the end, you'll self implode and there will be collateral damage. The people around you.

Second, who we are is determined not by how we act but how we RE-act. Trust me, when things happen and we fall or are kocked down or knock ourselves down, what we do next says a lot about who we choose to be. We are not 2 dimensional people but humans with a mosaic of feelings, experiences and angels and demons. How we choose to deal with these will affect who we are profoundly.

Through the last few months, I've learned a lot about myself and the people around me. Or the people I had around me. It's a blessing and has streamlined my life in both good and bad ways.

I'm grateful I was forced to look at myself and admit so many things. That part was and is by far the hardest. Now it's time to get up and walk on.

I'm excited to be posting work from CARNIVAL Comics soon and hopefully some great stuff in between. Thank you for being there with me. I don't forget it.

We are all works in progress and like the art we do, we don't exit this life perfect and done. We abandon life as a work in progress hoping for all of our flaws, we are still appreciated for the rest of our beauty. No one is an exception. Sometimes we need to die in order to be reborn again. Let's see what this year brings.

2010 Best of the Best: El Paso's Best Artist Winner for What's up Magazine

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 20px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_5bOMDxDl6wU/TD9ydkzhGzI/AAAAAAAAAHg/MAGxsBOi-Rw/s320/botbbanner.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494235922836822834" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 58px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_5bOMDxDl6wU/TD9ydSyDa9I/AAAAAAAAAHY/z0rD7BzI-8Y/s320/wuplogo1.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494235917998844882" />
I'm not big on contests or awards but if you're recognized it is an honor because that means that somewhere out there someone is recognizing you. That means a lot to me because as a creator my goal is to express myself and I do that by doing what I love. I love sequential art and I didn't think that had any room in the fine art world as well, but I guess it does.

For whatever reason, thank you all for the endless encouragement and kind words. I'm always appreciative that anyone at all cares about what I do. I hope I can continue to use my art to help people to think, feel and grow in any way possible. Thank you What's Up Magazine for helping El Pasoans vote me the city's BEST ARTIST this year. It's an honor. The nitty gritty of this case is how we feed these corporate creatures enough that they are capable of consuming US at some point. I'm the ARTIST for the upcoming issues for CARNIVAL Comics CARNIVAL of SOULS series, available for download on your smart phone. I can tell you that what I know and have seen leaves little doubt as to whether or not NBC indeed got lazy and stole story elements from the CARNIVAL of SOULS series.

This circumstance and the images are now a matter of public record so, although there will be a presiding Judge in the case, I know you will still judge based on what you see. That's what people do.

Since the lawsuit was filed, I've seen the response online and am perplexed at how quickly people have an opinion, especially after NOT having read the comic book in reference. The lawsuit is NOT based on stolen, CONCEPTS, TITLES or general IDEAS. The entertainment industry in general is full of projects that very obviously do "their" version of the same idea. Sometimes with similar TITLES and promotional graphic images to lull us into buying some derivitive or second hand version.

That IS NOT the issue here. What happens when you have generic ideas or concepts lifted but it doesn't stop there. What if YOUR "STORY" which was obviously literally available to anyone at their fingertips (You can read the Carnival of Souls comics on your smart phone right now so it's not like it's obscure) is used on a well financed show? We're talking about not only, the concepts (which aren't original) but specific screen shots, story elements and sequences of specific events that ecompass an entire story. Of couse, the characters are not expactly the same and other elements are different, but to focus on the differences is simply misdirection. We're talking about the elements that are the same.

The facts are, there was MOTIVE, ( the shows ratings were dropping) there was OPPORTUNITY, (I can't divulge those details) and the worst part of all, is I'm sure they think they can get away with it.

If you think, you're safe from this kind of corporate Piracy, think again. It's a subtle thievery but keep in mind these writers are under a lot of pressure to keep these huge shows afloat. It only takes one person to compromise their morals and a huge network to back them up for advertising money on a once successful show.

We all create comic books because we love them, and usually money isn't the reason we continue to do them but just because we're barely on the mainsteams radar that does NOT give some CORPORATION the right to do this. I love lot's of other NBC shows, so it's not a boycott but if it looks like a DUCK in this case.....

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 204px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_5bOMDxDl6wU/S6QRnaezQgI/AAAAAAAAAG4/C1OJA806h84/s320/SpideylizardColorLow.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5450500817846223362" />
It's been a while again since I've talked you guys again. I've been up to my ears in stuff and am behind I know,...so if you're waiting for something I promise to make it worth the wait.

It seems, my buddy Justin Carmona, entered me in a contest without my knowledge and it paid off. The PHOENIX CON Badge art Contest to be exact. It's a small contest for a large comic book Convention but in a nutshell if myself and the Colorist win, they will use the our art as THE Official Badge for the Con. That would be cool right?

Well, the voting is now open for about a week (It ends April 1st), so get on over to this link and VOTE! You do have to pick 10 in order of your preference but it's a fun way to kill some time. Keep in mind I'm not asking you to vote for me, I'd never do that. Vote Honestly for whomever you like best. I just hope it's mine. In case you don't know the piece that has SPIDEY and the Lizard is mine and Goran's the colorist. I don't think I would have been considered without those amazing colors!

So get on over there and VOTE!! Thanks a lot guys!! Obviously it's hard not to have a bias but keep in mind this book is the reason we're such good friends today. I was handed what is now the first issue by writer Justin Carmona (Hired Gun). At the time it was nothing more than an ashcan sized photocopied version of the first issue that is now available. Even though it was rough looking in every respect the story at the core of this book is what cemented my respect for Jon's storytelling ability.

One-Eyed Jack! is the story of Jack a strange creature even on a world of strange creatures. Or is he? Don't we all feel like we don't belong somehow? Jack, is a being with possible ties to the Greys. Classic Aliens that are constantly described by us humans after purported abductions. The first issues explains the reason he loses an eye and gives you a sense of the world Jack lives in and manages to inject subtle philosophy in the process. The battle in which Jack loses his eye isn't what you might think.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 205px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_5bOMDxDl6wU/SyKZfIbj1VI/AAAAAAAAAGw/umAXNkoGCiU/s320/Rudys_Jack.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5414058462170830162" />

One of the biggest components of the story is the use of lucid dreaming or astral projection, all brought forth by meditation. In this plane is where Jack makes his first discovery about himself and his inner self more notably. The story succeeds in touching higher concepts like, spirituality, philosophy and existentialism while still layering fun fanboy genre's like Kung-Fu, Science Fiction and Super-Heroism.

The design of the book and it's characters is eclectic and surreal. Jack's father is a feline/canine humanoid with spiky hair and Jack's mode of transportation is a giant Bee!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 207px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_5bOMDxDl6wU/SyKZeh20zWI/AAAAAAAAAGo/BYDwayBvKn8/s320/One_Eyed_Jack__page_2_by_Sapoman.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5414058451816205666" />

If there is anything Jon Castaneda could improve upon it's the illustration itself and yet, he is. I've just caught up on a few things and while I'm still busy, I'm making time to offer commissions at lower rates for the Holidays. It makes a great gift.I don't do commissions often because it usually takes me forever since my schedule is so tight but I've tried to streamline my commitments lately to focus on a few specific projects.

I can now do commissions but I'm not sure for how long. I'll keep it simple.

Pencils and Inks are-50$

Just pencils-40$

Print with FREE head shot of your choice-20$ (Ask about available prints 11x17")

These prices are usually double and it would usually take much longer to get them but this is a great deal for Christmas or to just get some art on sale. I'll do known characters but original characters may take a bit longer, so please have reference ready if you want something like that. Otherwise, Marvel or DC characters are preferred. At just the right moment too, it's one of many, many old songs I have on this play list and it was that one that had to come on as I typed my first words to you. Anyway, today is a dreary overcast afternoon...sometime past noon and I just finished ushering the kids out to the back yard to play as I wait for my seasoned grilled chicken and rice to cool for lunch. As I do this, my Dad has been reading the paper this morning, watching PBS and has made a few calls. A few calls to my grand mother's house, my Aunt's cell, and my Mom's work. You see, it's about that time my Mom should be pulling up from her job. That beat up, paint peeled, upholstery stained with the lives of a couple generations of children, family van, should make it's way to the front of our house any minute now. It's an hour and a half past the time my Mom gets out of work and we haven't received a phone call. As my Father paces in a subtle way, but very clearly uneasy, he ends up at one point in the living room, standing in front of the door, looking outside like a boy...waiting. His head drifts to the left and to the right as if to say, maybe on this day she will drive up from the opposite end of the street. Maybe I'll catch her at the moment she rounds that corner. Watching him, I couldn't help but relate and recall the many times I was in that position. My mind and my heart immediately stepped into my father's as I felt those days I worked at our home. Remembering that feeling I would get without looking at my watch but feeling like it was about that time you arrived from work. At times it was when you went out and you're excursion or errand ran just late enough that the tinge or worry had set in. In any case, there I was...finding myself, like my father, standing in front of the window peering out every 10 minutes, hoping to catch you as you drove up. At times for lack of a screen door I would open the door and stand under that poor excuse for a porch. Perhaps if I threw the trash out, I would tell myself, I would find you driving up as I walked to or from the dumpster. So, I watch my dad, even now,...with no TV on,..no music, just his uneasiness at the unknown whereabouts of the person he loves. A longing. Maybe the other 23 hours of the day as they work, or run an errand or do their own thing they are content..at ease in the absence of the other. It is at these moments, those slivers of time between those other moments when we feel that connection. To miss, to long, to love someone. Because, I see him and I see myself. If it were anyone else, my Dad would go on living, watch ESPN, read the paper, have lunch. I think it's at these moments, when he thinks perhaps it's taken too long, that those thoughts creep in. What would I do if she were ever gone? If she never drove up, if she were not in his life? I see a man, who loves a women and doesn't "need" but "wants" her to be with him. Not two halves of a whole but complimentaries of one another. He looks out that door, as I did. Wondering what life would be like without her. That is love. I'm not ashamed to have waited for you. I feel a little better everyday and understand that I don't "need" a women to wait at the door for me. She doesn't have to get up or peer out...but I do want someone that, in those moments,...thinks of me; gets a pang as I did, because there is a longing. A want, to Not want to live a life without me. Not a take it or leave it person. Where is the connection, the beauty of mutual partnership that God created for us to be happy, if she goes on without that gut feeling at his prolonged absence? I don't know what this is, or where we stand. I'm as confused as ever I can be, but that's where we began. In obscurity, with no real boundaries or structure and maybe that's where we'll end. I want someday to look out that front door like my father for the woman I love and have my heart sigh when she drives up. I had researched my genealogy and names origin in school and decided to redo my research to see if it was accurate. It was correct and thought I'd share it with you.

VASQUEZ-From the root VASCO; son of.

From the medieval Spanish name Velasco, which came from the Spanish surname Velázquez, which possibly meant "CROW" in Basque. A famous bearer was the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama, the first person to sail from Europe around Africa to India.

Alternate meaning-"SHEPHERD" of-from the Basque region (Southern France to Northern Spain)

RUDY:

Old Germanic in origin. Rudolph; meaning- FAME WOLF

I thought it was cool. So, I guess I'm a famous Wolf that Shepherds Crows/Ravens. I had some acquaintances that believed in tossing some black magic at people, via the Raven. I imagine if I put stock in that nonsense it wouldn't affect me much.

The stuff I write will be both philosophical and practical so take what works for you and disregard what does not.

I will be doing this in a very specific way by using the book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi as translated by Stephen F. Kaufman (Hanshi 10th Dan) as a template. Like before I will liken the martial arts with the art of comics. I want to emphasize that Miyamoto Musashi is Japan’s Sword Saint and possibly the greatest swordsman that ever lived. He lived in a time when killing was a way of life. Just like the old west so his ideals are extreme and uncompromising. For the few of us that choose this “art” of comics as way of life and not just a hobby we must view it in an uncompromising way. If not, the quality of the art suffers, our paychecks suffer and the efficiency of reaching our goals will suffer.

DEATH

Musashi was a warrior. To a samurai, achieving perfection was death. Or in death we finally realize perfection. We recite that perfect poem as we relinquish the graspiness of life that clouds our minds. For us, admitting perfection in our own skill or art is a rare if not completely unattainable thing. In fact if we begin to view our work as without flaw then, we are indeed dead. (Value your Editors) There will be no chance of improving upon perfection and so what will be the point of continuing? That is not to say that we cannot view someone else’s art as perfect. That is the nature of “subjectiveness”.

MASTER

“Warriors understand the only real measure of his ability lies in being able to beat men in fights.”-Musashi

This is true for a warrior because that is what he does. His occupation is rooted in combat. We as artists, more specifically comic book artists may in theory compete with one another in an over crowded market but in truth the only person we need to fight is ourselves. Be aware of those that make exclamations of superiority. Those that bark more than they bite like the Chihuahua. Those that seek rivalries and conflict in an industry like ours are simply insecure. Fame seekers that are done before they begin. Beating others makes you a fighter, but conquering yourself makes you a Master in the only way that makes sense. Every time you are working on something, try to beat yourself. Study and push yourself. Friendly rivalries have there place, the other kind only distracts you from defeating the only thing you need to be concerned with. Your own limitations.

For instance, I learned a new word this week: Mary Sue. Or for a male, Gary Stu. This is a character, or a style of writing that is created for one purpose: Wish Fulfillment (Of the writer/creator) I’m plugging this subject in here because this occurs a lot in this market where it’s so easy to do. With a publisher as big as Marvel and DC with so many editors and fans it’s hard to get anything by that is selfish to the writer because rest assured an irate fan that feels a good story is taking a back seat to the selfish wishes of a writer will be heard and acknowledged. They are paying for it after all.

In a smaller market where we can pretty much publish whatever we want with Print on Demand and even old style photo copy comics, we don’t have those checks and balances as much. So unless you have honest friends or editors with balls, we can get caught up in our Mary Sues and create and write characters that only serve us. Now, if we don’t care about what others think or don’t care about pushing ourselves as creators it’s ok. However; if we want to push ourselves, avoid creating all powerful, generic characters or hollow stories that push the limits of the generic. (Hence my NAZI-ZOMBIE-NINJAS in my Fan Girl piece) It was tongue in cheek.

It’s not easy writing something original these days, or creating something completely original but it’s not impossible. Quantity is not quality so as long as you keep trying to say something honest and evaluate your self you have nowhere to go but up.

Thanks for listening,

Humbly yours,

Rudy V.

RED SHIFT Web Comic-Wednesday Updates!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_5bOMDxDl6wU/R848N_zTtiI/AAAAAAAAACA/9TqsJC4Ji28/s320/RedShiftColored.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5174139233057879586" />
I've got several things on my plate, not the least of which is the work I'm doing for ROGUE WOLF Entertainment. They're a new publisher that does online comics that eventually get collected into printed comics. I've picked up the art chores on their weekly updated Space Opera, titled RED SHIFT. It's updated every Wednesday and my first contribution to the saga posted last week. http://comics.rogue-wolf.net/redshift/

A new page posts tomorrow. So please go there, bookmark this site and check back every Wednesday for a new advancement on the space saga. The pages you'll see are free but if you want the full issue down loads and color pages, it cost a subscription. Either way you can start the story from the beginning and get caught up at no cost to you.

While you're there, read The VEIL and NOCTURNAL ESSENCE. I'll be doing a few pages for NOCTURNAL ESSENCE (Vampire/Werewolf organized crime stuff), as well but I'll update you on that.

DON'T FORGET TO BOOK MARK THAT PAGE, IT'S FREE!!! http://comics.rogue-wolf.net/redshift/

Thanks again for your support, it makes all this worth it.

Give me a True LADY

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_5bOMDxDl6wU/R7cQZ_aaKKI/AAAAAAAAAB4/42QqQCRb3bo/s320/Grace.htm" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5167617136135907490" />
You know, especially in this generation, I feel there is a shortage of gentlemen. Believe me I agree and I hear it all over. It's on T.V., it's on the radio, it's complained about by the women we know. They say, " Where are the real men?" "Where are the gentlemen?"

Especially, with the uprise of sub cultures, in rock, or hip hop where recording artists are singing about women in ways that I wouldn't repeat to any girl I know, at least not if I was serious. lol-The thing is, are we programming the women too? Are they starting to buy it? Are they becoming, bitches, and hoe's, and just fine pieces. Do they think that, that is where there actual power is?

In a way they're right. For most men, we are ruled by one thing. This is an absolute statement but in a nutshell, it's "sex". The thought of it, the prospect of it, the sight of it. Women somehow have learned to use their appearance, they're bodies, their behavior to manipulate us. I can't say I blame them.

Still, this isn't something we all don't already know. What I'm here to point out is our FOCUS on GENTLEMEN, and our LACK of focus on the ABSENCE of LADIES.

Being either one means, having manners, being kind, and most importantly being considerate. The problem is, having already admitted that there aren't many "gentlemen" out there, who's demanding that a woman act like a "lady". As long as some idiot guy gets sex at some point he doesn't care how he's treated. If he doesn't like how he's treated or isn't going to get any he moves on to the next target/victim.

Yeah, I think women are so used to being the "victim" and demanding that they be treated with respect that they think nothing of their lack of respect for men. Their lack of consideration, thoughtfulness, courtesy. A woman that uses these qualities with not only people she knows, but with anyone, is a woman worth respecting. Anyone else is only a little girl and deserves how men treat them.

I suppose as long as more guys keep playing the game and "acting" like nice guys to get what they want, the "girls" won't have a real need to grow up.

I personally have encountered so many little girls with no, courtesy, that finding a real women with etiquette, manners, and consideration is like the holy grail. Believe me, if you are one, I will value you as a friend because it reminds me they exist. If I am ever lucky enough to call a true lady a partner, I'll appreciate that for what it is.

For the rest of the girls, you're a dime a dozen. Sizing men up, like men do you, acting like behaving as we do is cool. Cussing, smoking, ignoring, drinking to the point of embarrassment, not calling, lying,..ect.

Don't complain about men and how they treat you. You're not earning any kind of respect. Only that he'll be nice to you, until he gets it.

Don't complain about the lack of gentlemen,....they're just as rare as a true LADY.

Comic Art, My Kung-Fu

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_5bOMDxDl6wU/R2XzKsNHegI/AAAAAAAAABw/F6wCyxt6JGs/s320/bruce-lee.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5144785514331077122" />
I've had this notion brewing in my head for quite some time now. It's a fairly obvious one as one type of art can very easily have much in common with another. The arts, in general share many traits. It's only Martial Arts that I equate the most with slinging my pencil though. Maybe it's because I practiced Fun Ying Kung-Fu and Ninjitsu in my younger years and later a bit of Aikido. More than the physicality of the art I learned much more from the basic principles.

Kung-Fu in chinese is loosely translated as "work". In this case being a lead slinger is MY work. What has emerged as the biggest parallel to me is the multitude of styles. In martial arts, there are hard styles, like Karate, and soft styles such as Tai Chi Chuan or Aikido. In comics, the styles are so great that there can really be no clear way to name them all. House styles have emerged, like the Top Cow fellows. There are also more general styles like, Manga, Western style manga, realism, cartoony, traditional, and so many more that have no name but you know it when you see it. Many are patterned after their originator, like Jim Lee, Mignola, Joe Mad, Michael Turner, which may be the highest form of flattery or simply a less obvious form of plagiarism.

In some cases, like in house styles for example the originator passes his knowledge down in order to create a homogeneous look in their line of books. Perhaps, this is because they have been successful in their career with this "marketable" method that it stands to reason that books done with the same style will sell just as well. In some cases this is true.

This leads to a certain efficacy in particular styles. As in the birth of particular martial arts styles, they were refined from other styles and labeled as "the" most effective. As an art, all are successful and beauty is a subjective matter. The success I have always believed in art, it is not how it is received but to what extent is pleases the artist in it's expression. The honest expression of art is a way for us to learn about ourselves. The fact that others may gain a sense of pleasure from our expression is a by product. That is, if it's looked at solely as art. The same applies to comic book art.

Now, when we are talking about martial arts, not as art but as a method of self defense and comics not as art but as entertainment, the game changes. The effectiveness is measured in Kung-Fu and other martial arts by whether we are successful in avoiding harm. Whether by planting a well placed kick or simply using it as a deterrent we have achieved that success. In comic art, the success can be measured by sales figures if a particular artist is popular or the story telling has hooked our audience enough to come back for more. It can always be a battle to stay relevant and remain in demand. In fact, it's a fight just to be in demand in the first place. That all depends on our commitment and willingness to grow as an artist. To take the shots and press on. Honing what we do until we get our foot in the door. If we are talking about not just aesthetic evocation but strong story telling, that adds more strengths to your repertoire. In other words, not just pretty pictures but skills that include elements of story telling will increase your chances of succeeding in the arena of comics.

It's no secret that some artists have more inherent talent than others. Just like Bruce Lee seemed to have been born with preternatural speed and skill, some artists appear to have that God given talent that makes the rest of us feel like mere mortals. The fact is, even Bruce Lee and Jim Lee practiced day in and day out to achieve near perfection in their craft. We are no different.

The issue of competitiveness is less an issue in comics than it was in say post Feudal Japan, where dojos had no one to fight except themselves. Our friendly art jams are more an exercise of comradery. There is friendly professional competition amongst publisher's like Marvel and DC comics. To my chagrin, I discovered that in a strange way, that base instinct to battle somehow comes down to territory. In some cases the primitive gravitation toward feudalism can be alive and well when another studio in your small area poses a perceived threat to another. This in relation to comic book studios is comical, but for some reason members of a studio are good natured to everyone else, on the net and beyond but so fragile in the ego and so alive is that instinct of territory that rivalries in home towns do exist.

It's a ridiculous and clearly laughable notion that honor can be compromised and this can occur in the world of comic books but it does. In an industry where firsts are always marked with issue number one's and declared with dramatic word balloons it's no wonder individuals are threatened by new blood as they are frightened of being forgotten before they have achieved anything of significance. Rival studios unfortunately are alive and well among the short sighted community that is already rife with egos too large to ever fit into any door reserved for those more deserving.

Is my Kung-Fu better than yours? If you answered that in your head in any way, rethink that. We draw comics, it's irrelevant,...we only battle ourselves. Fighting to improve, attempting to achieve success, however it is we define that success. As individuals it will be different for each of us, so find harmony in your art if that's what you seek or the opportunity to get paid in order to do what you love. I will attempt both.

Overdue Free Comic Book Day 2007!

My hands were constantly busy....

A weary Angela (Project 4 Groupie), takes a break.
Justin Carmona, our senior Editor and Hired Gun Creator gives his best gay Joker impression.
My best friend Jess and I, show Justin how awkward PDA is done.
This is the reason I keep doing this.

I know this update is no longer an update because it's so overdue.....but what the hell! That's usually why I don't critique other people's work. In comics as in any other creative forum there are many that revel in the opportunity to argue why what they like is good and why something else is not. What it always boils down to is "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." What I wanted to talk about though is "pretension".

This was spurred on while I read an independent comic by guys ( I used to know) that love comics but try to be cool by sticking it to the "man", who in this case are the corporate comic titans Marvel and DC. They spurn anything we might call mainstream for independent comics. That alone is a personal choice and it's logic is sensible. They believe that independent comic books offer something more anyway, maybe a twisted truth that speaks about social or political topics. Or in some cases it's just what I call honest "mamadas", which is basically "senseless" stuff that is sometimes funny, maybe entertaining. I can understand not wanting to line the pockets of corporations that only see green.

Still, to me that's an ignorant black and white point of view. As creative individuals, I feel we shouldn't allow ourselves to shun particular books because they are published by Marvel OR an unknown local venture printed in someone's garage. The bottom line is GOOD is GOOD and CRAP is CRAP no matter where it's published. Granted some publishers put out better stuff than others at certain times but pretension like this is just a prejudice that may be spawned by an inherent realization that it's safer to feel like a big fish in a small pond rather than be told you're not good enough by some guy that doesn't necessarily know what's brilliant instead he knows what sells.

As a creative person that may not be "good" enough for a major publisher, thank God for the opportunity I have to self publish, but being independent doesn't mean it's cool or even good, just as being published at one of the big two doesn't make it worth your money.

Buy what you like, period.

Oh, the above image is hopefully worth your money, an image I did of DINAGIRL for Paper Dragonz. Things are so much richer in spring. As opposed to summer, it's warm not hot, even the colors look more vibrant in it's infancy. The greens come alive and the air is sweet with the flavor of life. As the earth comes alive again, so do the hopes and fervor of our creativity as artists or writers in the comic industry.

I for one am excited to create and draw kick ass new pieces of work for the con season. This is the time of the year everyone prepares for San Diego, you can feel it. The blood, sweat and tears drip from furrowed brows as we pour our souls into the work, hoping it brings us even more reason to continue doing what we love. I for one am buzzed about this year and what it might bring. We all wait for what used to be the "phone call", which is now more likely the "e-mail" that asks us if we want to work on that dream job, or work at that dream publisher. Yes, the air is rich with promise. In my excitement I laid down some test pages for DC, and as I keep working on current projects and pages like these, I'll be waiting... for "the call". Spring is around the corner, I'm just warming up!

DALLAS CON 2006!

Jessica, Myself and Dave Finch!

                                                                              Falling asleep....must...drink...Latte...

(Lft to Rt) Me, Jessica, Chet Yeary, Tone Rodriguez, Angel Medina and 2 cool Con volunteers.

Me, Angel M., and Tone! uh,...wait, this wasn't supposed to be seen.

My little bro , Erik and Chet after too much wine.

This is long overdue, I kind of forgot being that I didn't have the net after I came back from the con but here it is anyway! The convention was a blast! Always more fun and intimate because it's just not huge like San Diego but it's more fun! Mostly due to the friends I see there every year. This year my girlfriend, Jessica and I were hosted again by my good friend and writer Chet Yeary. We enjoyed all the cool fanboy stuff, admired the great art and boy did we eat good! Chet knows all the best places as a Dallas native.

We also drank and ate with the usual gang, my mentor Tone Rodriguez (Violent Messiahs), Angel Medina (Spider-Man), Dan Wickline, Buzz!, and a few more new faces. Including my little brother, Erik, who came down to hang with us for the weekend. He can draw too and he's probably better at it. I hope next year is just as fun and productive. Till then, take it easy!

Men and Women

You know, I think about a lot of random things daily. To the chagrin of my girlfriend, these thoughts tend to culminate in my vocalizing them... to her. It's funny because, when I am drawing and want to talk to her or even listen, she wants to play Sims quietly without me pestering her contemporary state of Zen. Then, when I'm taking a break to watch one of my many manly shows with her, like, Ugly Betty or American idol, she unleashes a wordy river of thoughts that hang in the air as sound and fade away as I slowly try to listen but really want to "listen" to the program instead. (It's just timing people) In the end, both are compromised and I still get scolded while missing some integral plot point. Believe me, I do love to listen and engage in conversation with my partner but it's difficult to grasp the habits of women. Happily long married couples, realize at some point that "she" is always right, even if "she" isn't. It's just easier that way.

In the workplace it's even more treachurous to comprehend where a woman "really" stands. To be honest, I feel more sorry for them because they must outmaneuver each other. I mean, politics is a part of the work environment but at least men play this game with some degree of honor. It's sort of linear thought for us. For them, it's, "Hi" accompanied with a smile and or a hug with the premise of genuine interest. Then, they go around and say and or feel something else altogether. They back- stab, lie, insinuate, ect. That my friends is the meat of why communication is an issue. We don't speak the same language. Not to say that men don't lie, or aren't without deceptions, mostly though it's for very simple motives. The female motive is buried so deep at times that I doubt she knows why. BTW, they mostly play these games with each other.

I have had the misfortune of meeting the rare breed of male that behaves like a woman. With indirect communication and the same sugar soaked fake smile. Still, they are a rarity and not to be trifled with, just simply avoided. I am very comforted in the fact that most of us guys while, generally ruled by our ID, the primal basic nature to spread our seed and conquer, it's these basics that make us so easy to figure out. The opposite is true of the other gender that while I won't try to fully understand, I truly appreciate for all the virtue they bring in terms of practicality and inner strength.

I had no idea where this came from.....

Happy Holidays!

It's Christmas Eve and I'm enjoying every second with family but in the business of deadlines, work is never really done. I kind of miss the days of doing the 9 to 5 getting it done and relaxing at home, till the next day,....kind of. I love working when I need to, as some of you might relate to, when I am taking a break or in this case enjoying a Holiday, the business of my undone pages looms securely over my head. It's always a case of never enough hours in a day, but I'd have it no other way.

This has been an extremely trying time in terms of money and pursuing what I love, but it's sacrifice for the greater good and a more prosperous future, which can't always be measured in dollars and cents. I only hope my girlfriend and daughter feel the same way when they look back and remember the gifts I made for them instead of bought.

In some ways I feel richer these days and hope that it's even possible to experience more happiness than I have been. It's a race for time in order to complete this latest project, the "Farm", that I am learning new things on and stretching myself in terms of mood and drama. The new year holds much promise and I'm very fortunate that anyone out there even cares to look at what I do and get something from it.

I'm going to digress here but I just saw "Rocky Blaboa" and in it he says, it's not that we get kocked down, but the fact that we can get knocked down over and over and keep coming. That's been my life for the last 10 years it seems like. On my ass most of the time, but I'm still hear and I'm still dreaming. Have a Happy new Year!

The "FARM" gets Underway

Finally Craig Thornwells screenplay adapted graphic novel the "FARM" is underway and is my focus these couple of months. It's up to the boys that run Deadboy, but I'll keep you informed as I get release info!

I'm well into finally getting the aforementioned "FARM" project, underway. It's a graphic novel about a mythic giant who has assimilated through centuries into our society and does what comes natually to all giants. He eats people. What seems like just another cannibal story is actually a cool twist on the gore-fest treats we all know and love. I'll post a page from the books opener next time.

If you have any design work needed, covers, pin-ups or the like, contact me. Posting here is going to be more sparse since I lost my i-net, yeah, starving artists back in the day never incurred this many expenses right? I-net, cell phones, yada yada...I mean, I have other silly things to pay for, like, food, shelter, (gulp)....gas. Aarrgh! Something's gotta give. On the plus side, the benefits of my i-net marketing in terms of my comic artwork are paying off, so it's not AS crucial these days. Still, having a presence on the net is a good thing. Again on the plus side, I have more time to do the actual work.

Speaking of, my work for DEADBOY PRESS on the Something Evil book is wrapping up and other projects will soon follow, more on that as it developes. The Dallas con is fast approaching so, if you intend to go let me know, so we can shake hands.

New news?

I know I haven't posted here in while but no news, means news is being created. At this point I really just need to vent, plain and simple. This as the title says is about EGO's.

In a job we deal with them and in this case it's the comic biz. We have them and we encounter them in others. Sometimes it's hard to know where and when an EGO's influence should begin and end. I think as far as "A" list Artist's and Writers we've heard stories or had our own experiences that leave us wishing the image wasn't ruined by that encounter. Our impression of our icons is much better left to the printed page sometimes. At other times, meeting these talents really just adds to our admiration as they are patient, gracious and just an example for all of us.

This rant was prompted by recent events and to be honest a long tradition unfortunately in the small press, (if it can even be called that) arena in my small town which has spawned maybe ONE big talent that has become succesful in the sense that he's making a living doing this. THAT person is a great example of checked ego and professionalism.

An EGO can be a force for good as it is for most in the industry. Let's not be coy here, we secretly utilize our EGO as fuel in that we see what others do and say to ourselves, "I want to be better than that guy." I'd wager we all do it and that's ok, I mean that's the nature of competition. It keeps us striving to outdo one another and who win's? The fans.

What isn't cool is the "dark side", if you will. I recently read a few weeks back on Deviant Art a journal that asked for people to share their encounters with EGO's while that person could have easily been the SUBJECT of a story. It was completely laughable to me, as he is completely passive aggressive about his JEALOUSIES. That is it, right there. Jealousy. It's one thing to want to outdo someone but when it becomes jealousy, that gives way to closing ones self up and really giving off a vibe that screams, "Hey, look at me instead of him." Once we decide to NOT talk to someone because they intimidate us or we are jealous of them is a step in the wrong direction. If things get better for me and I made some money doing this for a living, I'll hopefully read back on this and check myself because nobody wants to be that fake guy with an overgrown EGO with not enough talent to back it up.

Unless you're "the best there is at what you do", humility is the best bet.

Well, this is probably nothing you don't already know.
Sayonara

Huey Lewis and the News

So it's my birthday right? The date isn't important, at least not for this day,...anyway, I'm having dinner with my parents and my awesome girlfriend Jessica who in fact arranged the dining experience and company for the occasion. During the meal she surprises me even further with two tickets to an upcoming concert with Chicago (Not a HUGE fan) and HUEY LEWIS. Yes, BIG fan (and I'm not Psycho-referencing that cool movie with Cristian Bale) and Jessica suggests I take my father. I guess she felt it was a way for her to give me something AND initiate an experience with my Dad we could remember (my Dad and I haven't done much father-son stuff, at least not just the two of us). Well, believe me we'll never forget.

So, at that time it was about a month away and all the while she kept the tickets safely in her posession and a week before she was kind enough to remind me to call my Dad and make sure he didn't have plans the following saturday. Ok, did that and that weekend came we were ready to go! We got all our stuff together, Oh I didnt mention, we live in El Paso and the concert was in Albuquerque so a ROAD TRIP had to be planned. Since we aren't rich, snacks had to be packed, gas money carefully calculated, new rear tires that were balding to make the trip safely, ect, ect.

Off we go! More father son time I guess. Now I've driven to Albuquerque before for the Harry Connick Jr. Concert Jess and I went to a couple years back so I know how to get there, but my Dad being the confident Road goer that he is decides to take another way. Suffice to say it wasn't the norm. By the time we reach the city he believes we cut through that will take us to where we need to go,uncertainty kicks in. It's been a healthy drive so far, but by then we pretty much said most of what can be said in terms of the back and forth. So, we stop at a Chevron in Alamagordo and ask the only two employees there where we need to go next. What do we get in response? "Oh, so sorry we're from Kansas." No Joke! The both of them to!

So, we stop at a rest stop with a gift shop and such at some point and finally the guy pretty much tells us that our choices are to keep going west but it'll mean were pretty much back tracking because we need to go North West, or go North East through the town and cut west again but it'll be further north where we need to be. Argh! We decide to go the latter and let me tell you those roads were long and baren! We didn't say to much except, "When's this road gonna end?" Meanwhile I was running low on snack size cheetos bags.

Okay, we finally get to Albuquerque and make it just on time to the concert, after having a bit of trouble locating an easily accessible gas station from the freeway we treck along to the concert that has us driving down and up this long winding road thru what looked like a development plot for a residential area. We see the parking lot and that's it , no cars. Knowing we weren't early I noticed the stage was in something of a pit, so over the crest had to be where all the folk were as well as the action.

We drove down and nothing but a truck and a lady sweeping. My Dad and I looked at each other and I yanked out the tickets,.....SUNDAY 7:30 PM ,.....NOT SATURDAY!!!

My fault for not reading the tickets before stuffing them in my pocket before leaving. Jess felt terrible and needless to say, my Dad wasn't in the mood to stick around. The trip back was painful (as we didn't stop for a bathroom break going or coming) and very quiet. Neither of us said much.

The next day Jess and I drove up there again and enjoyed Huey's tunes. I still wonder if she had that planned all along....

Never stop GROWING

Ah,...I was contemplative today and reading an old WIZARD special dedicated to JIM LEE. He's pretty much the reason I'm even attempting to do comics in the first place. Of course I have one of those stories about the first time I ever saw his stuff. For me it was that Punisher War Journal Issue that had Wolverine and Punisher on the cover fighting in Africa or something, anyway I was in Junior High and at the time with no money I didn't really buy comics much. The next time I got an issue of the Punisher War Journal was number 8 and I lied to my Dad and told him that I was collecting all the issues so he would buy it for me at 7-Eleven. I guess at the time I enjoyed the character even though I owned absolutely no Punisher issues before that but this was my first (oblivious to me at the time) attempt at following an artists work. I was well aware of the art and immediately took this guys name to memory.

Well, that was a rant, my point was in the intro written by James Robinson he notes that JIM is an artist that grows and will always be growing like so few other ever popular artists that stand the test of time. He also points out that with some artists we know that this is what we get. Nothing more. They have reached that point and it's a comfy spot. The last set artists are worse because after a peak it's pretty much down hill from there. It's unfortunate because some artist don't do this purposely but that's why those that do grow and evolve and keep their art from going stale is a rare thing.

Ideally, I only hope that I am grouped in the "growth" column.

Sayonara

FREE COMIC BOOK DAY-Sketch Photos

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; These are photos of Project IV members that were at Allstar comics on Free Comic book day. The rest of the team was at the Time Capsule and photos can be found at the RavenMocker blog (check my links). I'm the tiny guy in the dark blue collared shirt (far left), Sirac, my cousin the bald one, Justin Carmona the one in the black shirt always working the camera and Joey Lee (our padawan) in the red tee. My girl friend Jessica graced only one photo with me (sadly) which is the second photo from the top as she helps me with a reader her cousin Angela asked for a sketch of Sirac's character Cruz, (found in HIRED GUN #2 coming this summer) she is pictured on the bottom photo.

It was a great day with tons of autographs, free sketches and giveaways. Thanks to all you readers that came out and supported us! We do this for you! Don't be shy give us some feedback on your experience or what you think of our work!

EL PASO ANIME CONVENTION!!

This is a bit late, but I've been having computer problems. Anyway, another update for Project IV, we will be present at this year's EL PASO ANIME CONVENTION at the Utep Union. As per the usual, stop by for sketches and of course this is another chance for you to pick up a signed copy of FUSION X #1.

Where? UTEP Union Building

When? Friday and Saturday June 2nd and 3rd 10:30-9:30 pm

Cost? I know I have to pay 5 dollars for 1 day or 7 dollars for 2 days but I'm an exhibitor, not sure if you have to pay.

Either way it's not much and there will be ANIME movies showing, Video game tournaments, workshops on Kendo and Manga story boarding, as well as other manga artists. Stop by and say "HI".

By the way if you've already picked up a copy of FUSION X, write us at project4publishing@yahoo.com with a review and if we post it on our site, you'll get an original piece of art from one of our artists. I've been super busy working on so many things I haven't had alot of time to post. So, for all you El Pasoans waiting for the next local indie book it's here and Man! Is it worth the wait. Project IV has put together an anthology that does not promise an ongoing series that doesn't happen or publish a short story that leaves you hanging only to never see it end, nor does it tout itself to be raging success. It just delivers. With very diversified and poignant stories that begin and end it's a worthwhile read that leaves you satisfied. I'm not just saying this because I worked on it but because I sat and read it like a fan. I'm lucky to be working with this group of talented guys!

We will be at TINSLETOWN theatres ( Near Zaragoza) in El Paso TX, after 5 PM on Friday, May 26th with a very limited supply of the book. Those that take advantage of this will get the first printing of this awesome introduction to what Project IV has to offer. Above is the cover. Oh yeah, there's also a small movie showing, called X3, catch it if you can. See you there.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://rudyvasquezcomicbookartist.blogspot.com/2006/05/fusion-x-release-friday-may-26th.html' title='FUSION X release!!! More notably a U.T.F Pinup and an 8 page preview of an upcoming series about werewolves called NADIR! Too Cool!

If you want a review of U.T.F. issue #1 you can follow the link ape-entertainment.com to the grunts section and the link to the Brokenfrontieer.com review of #1 AND #2. I've seen and read the advance pages and I think the story enlivens the concept and hits you hard with awesomely tempered artwork by Ton Rodriguez. His pencils pull you into the page with his classicly fresh style. Check out what broken frontier had to say about it.

If you like what you read, order an issue from your local shop and if you live in El Paso, order #2 while you're at it. I'll catch up with the copy if it's in your pull list and sign it or you can wait for a signing we'll have with this book and our Fusion X to get my John Hancock. Remember it's a 3 issue mini so no long term committment! I'm not asking you to marry me. Just order U.T.F. #2. Do you watch the Family Guy? Yea, I can't get enough perverse humor, which is why I agreed to do these sketch cards for InkWorks. I illustrated 300 sketch cards, in which 1 will be inserted in a box of 24 packs randomly. I'm not supposed to show images of these cards for legal reasons, so here is a link to an official InkWorks sampling of some that I did and the other great artists contributing. http://www.inkworks.com/products/familyguy/familyguy2/familyguy2sketch4.html

Breaking in to comics....a must SEQUENTIALS

I got this bug to write about this because I know this really awesome artist who has actually had stuff published. Not just anywhere but MARVEL. He's still looking for more work, and I was wondering...so what's impeding his progress? He's got a very slick marketable style and he's drawn a few high profile pin ups and a few covers. Then I noticed in his online gallery......NO SEQUENTIALS. If there were I didn't notice them.

So it occured to me that I have indeed seen plenty of artists, some that are amazing, post mostly pin ups. I used to be the same way. In fact the only reason I have sequential pages is that I drew them for a job. What wasn't paid was published, even if it was self published. So I understand how difficult it is to want to do all that work if it's not going to print or it's for free. The simple fact is some people, a very rare few, are good enough to start out in the biz doing only covers. So why is the art being posted on all the forums mostly that? If you look at Digital Webbing's forum the posts for pin ups are 10 times the amount of the sequential section. Editors won't hire you based on a pin up, no matter how many you do. If they do it's because you're super talented, but most likely they'll want to see sequentials. Why? Because if you fall under the average range as far as being good doing covers exclusively is a privelege that's earned by proving you can sell books. Paying your dues means doing interiors, because "Names" on the cover sell books. That's why a "Name" is hired to do the Covers of a series that could use that extra "umph". Michael Turner and Joe Mad could live off of doing covers. We most likely will have to earn our place in the trenches building stock in our names before that's a possibility. Keep in mind I'm talking about well paid covers for high profile books.

So, instead of drawing one pin up after another, really dig into those sequentials and show that you can be fast and reliable. You never know when you'll get that call, then it's sink or swim baby.

Once you go Black...

Aw, who was I kidding. Now here are the details on what to expect in the book and who's working on it.

Four (4) self contained 8 page stories, the first (The order may vary in print) being a story featuring EL VALIENTE. A Mexican wrestler pulp hero standing against a slew of horrific Monsters. Created and written by our own RAY RAMOS and wonderfully illustrated by the chatty ELMER PASAOA. Believe me this is a quick injection of pure fun.

Next we have WAY OF THE SWORD. A mythic tale with beautiful design work, armies, decapitation, and plenty of drama. This is written, and illustrated by the renaissance man himself, HUGO CANTU.

Third is a tentatively titled story the WERE-BEAR. Hailing his return from comicdom is JUAN MURO known for his work on GRIPS from GREATER MERCURY comics years ago. He writes and provides the art for this short story that is comical, action packed and beautifully rendered. A champion must deal with a rogue magically conjured Were-Bear that is the instrument of an over confident wizard.

Lastly is DEAD HORIZON, a story about a man and his daughter surviving psychologically and literally in a wasteland littered with the undead. This is a nod to Zombie lovers. Created and scribed by JUSTIN JUDE CARMONA and drawn by myself.

In addition we plan on having a JAM POSTER as seen below in it's design infancy printed to give away and hopefully grace your wall soon! Look for us in MAY and through out the summer folks. Don't be afraid to drop me or us a line whenever you like.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://rudyvasquezcomicbookartist.blogspot.com/2006/04/who-and-what-fusion-x.html' title='Who and what? Some old acquaintences, some new but all of them are going somewhere. The name was penned by HIRED GUN writer and creator Justin Carmona as a poke at all those X franchises and those who ride on those coat tails. This is a "tongue in cheek" title that pokes fun at ourselves as well. The book itself is an anthology with 4 stories ranging from a mexican luchadero fighting Dracula to a tale of a rogue wizard conjured werebear.

Another reason this anthology is so personal to me is that is represents our efforts in changing what we thought prior El Paso creators have done in reference to comics. We meet often and try to have a semblence of organization and try to invest in our talents through realistic views. I'm not saying it's bad to dream but putting out a black and white ash can and promising a series not picked up by any established publisher and not making good on that promise is heart breaking and just foolhardy. Not only are we attempting to put out self contained stories that we hope leave the reader satisfied but asking for more without feeling it was a hack job. That's another goal-Quality. We want to offer great stories and great art that grows and improves. We wanted this so much we tracked down, hog-tied, drugged and made Juan Muro (GRIPS) do a story with us. He is now as much a part of Project IV publishing as any of us. We aren't what El Paso is used to getting every so many years. Like the HIRED GUN book, this is going to be something worth picking up. You don't have to like the stuff, but know this wasn't a last minute all nighter either. This is just a local self publication but if you want more info or a copy contact us. I'll update you as things get closer to our may release. www.project4publishing.com

The FARM

Okay, another project I'm signed to do is for a production company; NEXT Entertainment. They have produced reality shows like The Bachelor and High School Reunion for ABC. They have also produced the remake of TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE and are currently working on Tarantino's HOSTEL 2.

I'm adapting a screenplay that may go into production into a comic book called the FARM. It's about a cannibal that not only eats his victims but prepares them in oil and seasoning, GRUESOME! Because of it's length, it'll probably be a graphic novel. In addition to myself doing the art chores and the creation and screenplay written by Craig T. Thornwell (of NEXT Ent.) the lettering and adaptation from the screenplay to comic script is being handled by none other than my pal Justin Jude Carmona. (Yeah, I vouched for him) He's one of the more talented writers I've been lucky enough to know and work with. Again, more on this as it develops.

RABID FROG Prod. I met them at the Wizard World Dallas Con and are pretty awesome guys. They had a pretty sweet set up next to our favorite artist, you guessed it! Rob Liefeld. Was that sarcasm? You decide. Anyway, I'm revamping a title of theirs called SEVEN 33. It's about a genetic experiment gone awry. It looks to be good fun. Here's the link to their site to find out more. http://rabidfrogpro.com/

Look there, here, and my deviant art site for more art on this project as it comes along.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://rudyvasquezcomicbookartist.blogspot.com/2006/04/rabid-frog-prod-contract.html' title='RABID FROG Prod. I think they'll appreciate the exta buzz anyway.

First off I'm working on a fantasy title called Some Evil for Deadboy Press. Presently I'm penciling issue #3 after completing #2. It's a sword and sorcery story where I get to stretch those penciling muscles and sharpen my skills. I thought it would be cool to let you know what to look out for in terms of what I'm working on right now. It's kind of tricky posting things on the net when it's part of something to be published. I did 3oo Family Guy sketch cards for Inkworks and I can't post them myself, but it they should have a select few to view on the official site soon: http://www.inkworks.com/products/familyguy/familyguy2/familyguy2newprod1.html

I just wrapped up an 8 page Preview of an Upcoming book set in El Paso, TX about Werewolves. It's called Nadir and will be published under the ArchEnemy label at Ape Entertainment in June. It's at the back of UTF#2 drawn by (Violent Messiahs) Tone Rodriguez. It's a cool book, check it out. As you mayalready know, I can't post any Preview art till the book is released. Check out the title at Ape's website: http://www.ape-entertainment.com/preutf201.htm

Myself and Justin Jude Carmona are adapting a screenplay for a horror movie called "The Farm" that might go into pre-production soon. It's coming out of Next Entertainment which is responsible for the new version of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Not surprisingly this story is about a cannibal. It looks like this will be big enough to be a graphic Novel. More on that as it develops.

At this point, the other projects I am working on don't have a problem with me posting work from them so I will. I welcome an comments and you can e-mail me for commisions, questions, or if you just plain want to say "Hi". It's been a busy year so far and it doesn't look to be slowing down.

As close to a journal I want to keep.

This blog is as close to being a journal that I'll probably get. Just having a written record of every intimate thought and deed scares me. The mystique that people carry without noticing is the attraction to which we respond to. We as curious people that love to unveil the hidden treasures of others one layer at a time. Anyway, this is isn't something I do naturally so we'll see how it goes. I'm a pro comic book penciler, son, boyfriend, father and sometimes, pain in the ass. Maybe it will be therapeutic, or cathartic. I'll post work of mine and try not to insult anyone if I have something I just need to get off my chest. BTW I made this blog Blue because all the people I know that have a blog here are so cool they all have a black one. I love black and it constitutes about 80 pecent of my wardrobe color scheme, but more than I love black I dislike following the crowd.
